Bitter cold and a white hoar frost that has stayed all day. Jack Frost, the frost sprite of folk legend, was here last night, painting leaves on glass and showering diamonds of ice onto grass stems and bare branches.
This poem, written in a more innocent age, is one that I remember from childhood.
Look out! Look out! Jack Frost is About.
Look out! Look out!
Jack Frost is about!
He`s after our fingers and toes;
And, all through the night,
The innocent sprite
Is working where nobody knows.
He`ll climb each tree,
So nimble is he,
His silvery powder he`ll shake;
To windows he`ll creep,
And while we`re asleep,
Such wonderful pictures he`ll make.
Among the grass
He`ll merrily pass,
And change all its greenness to white;
Then home he will go,
And laugh "Ho! Ho! Ho!
What fun I have had in the night!"

Hello, and thank you for your comment - you'll see I've reciprocated in Following. I love what I've read so far; I'll certainly be back!
Thank you Rachel, and welcome!
Reading of frost pictures on the windows brought back my childhood when this was a common occurence in the winter - no central heating in tghose days of course! I clearly remember my mum sayig 'Jack Frost has been'
when she came in to wake me in the morning.
Frost flowers on windows are incedibly beautiful, but how cold it is outside when they "bloon."
Thermal pane windows have mostly done away with frosty etching, and we're left with dreary edgings of dribbling ice along the sill.
Frosty windows and hoar frosts on grass, bushes and leaves are so beautiful. We rarely get frost down here. If I hear the temp is going down below 40, I have run out and cover my plumeria. It has survived quite a few winters and we typically only get freezing temps about twice a winter.
