Puddles and Ponies

Heavy showers have blown in from the south west today and soaked us every time we tried to do anything useful outside. Thankfully we had an hour of warm sunshine this evening, when it was time to walk around the fields with a wheelbarrow. The ground was saturated and puddles were standing everywhere. Blue sky and clouds were reflected in water around the raised beds and the roots of raspberries in the fruit cage.

A pool of shallow run-off water stood in the field at the bottom of the slope.

More trickled down a drainage stream and reflected blue sky between buttercups.

Paddled mud has pooled at a field edge. These puddles soon drain away through the sandy soil, but in the meantime the wet mud is a feeding place for birds. Swallows skim the sodden fields for insects to feed their young.

Is it teatime? Jay and the Grey One heard the field gate and cantered down the field, expecting their evening snack, soothing fly cream and some friendly words.

Life is very itchy when you are drying out after a shower...........

....and waiting for the wheelbarrow.

Ginger and the Chocolate pony are both getting better, thank goodness. They were eating their supper in the field shelter this evening, away from the flies.

Has thrush been a problem for you there with all that rain the New Forest has had?

glad the ponies are progressing. It is a similar scene here, with flood water lying right across the fields. Within days of one "lake" appearing, a pair of swans arrived.

They're beautiful and your puddles are worse than ours! I think, being so high here, it all runs off down the hill. It's absolutely tipping down at the moment. Will it ever end?

Glad to see them all looking so well, and poorly-ones on the mend. I just hope that you have recovered from the size of the vet's bill!

At least your land drains quickly. We just used to have a winter quagmire for months on end when we had our three . . .

Your ponies are so lovely and I'm so pleased to hear the Ginger and Chocolate ponies are getting better. I am wondering if the rain is ever going to stop :(

The ponies are lovely and happy the hear Ginger and Chocolate are better.
I an amazed to keep hearing about all your rain, have you had a summer at all ? So much rain.
We are having our monsoon season and we are being told not too much summer rain this year but hopefully more winter rains.
We only have two rainy seasons and are very depended on them.

cheers, parsnip

Just read your last post on the rose buds rotting. Mine are just not moving, they seem as though they are stuck. The weather is taking its toll on everything and I just hope it soon clears up.
Hope your ponies are okay now, what a worry...

I have always thought that flies must drive animals crazy. Also I don't think this awful weather is good for any of our animals.

Really pleased to hear that the two ponies are getting better now. Fingers crossed summer is just about to arrive and mud will be a distant memory.....x
