From West Dorset - A View of Jupiter

Last week, on a rare clear night, my son took this photograph of Jupiter from his West Dorset back garden. He has been watching the stars for some years, but it was only recently that his new camera equipment enabled good photographs to be taken through his telescope. I have his permission to post this on my blog. He was really pleased with the result and the image quickly arrived here via i phone!

We have been watching the BBC Stargazing Live series and I have just looked at their pages on the BBC website. There is so much information and some amazingly beautiful images from space.

Back here on earth, we are in the grips of grey, drizzly weather with a band of heavy rain due overnight. Yesterday was beautiful. Sunshine and blue skies for a day! Despite the wilder weather of our winter, one look at the constant, rolling storms of Jupiter puts things into perspective.

Oooooo - that's brilliant. I'm such a lightweight that I always go to bed in favour of catching a brilliant meteor shower or planetary experience. Very happy to see other people's views. Thank you!

That's a fantastic picture- how exciting to have equipment that lets you take close ups of the planets. I bet he can't wait to do more.

What a great shot your son took.

My dad is an astronomer and he has taken some amazing photos over the years through his telescopes. I'd love to do it, but I haven't mastered normal photography yet so don't think I'm ready to take on astro-photography!

Wonderful! Thank your son for us as ex-RAF flyboy loves to stargaze (telescopes - plural! - features prominently in our living room however the Pacific NW coastline's sky is often cloudy as well!)

Hope this latest spate of rain is the tail end of the nasty weather you've been having and that there will be fair weather for at least the next month or two.

Absolutely lovely photographs - I was there on that beach with you. I think when we get a day like that we have to take advantage of every minute. Fantastic planet photograph too.
