Periwinkle Blue

On Monday morning, as frost melted in the sun, I found the first blue periwinkle of early spring.

Beech buds had lost the scaly coverings of winter and waited, silver against the sky, to burst into leaf.

Woody`s coat gleamed in the sunlight.

Pockets of frost stayed white in a shady corner of a field........

.....but in the sun, even short cropped grass seemed to be growing once again.

More primrose flowers had opened,

starlings waited in high branches, until I filled the bird table........

...and out in the lane, hazel catkins shook out their yellow lambs tails in the boundary hedge.

Interestingly enough I had the landscapers nuke my periwinkle that a previous owner of my townhouse had planted. It had taken over the azalea bushes and boxwoods and was threatening to take over the front stoop.

Nothing has poked its head out of the ground here in North Carolina yet, but you can see the trees start to pink up as the leaf buds start to grow.

Periwinkle blue is one of my favorite colors. It's still cold here. I'm so ready for it to be spring -- or at least to warm up!

Spring is on its way.... even if it is raw and dank today, we can see the signs, thank goodness.

How wonderful to have signs of spring. I love to see rows of Starlings taking a rest while they watch for food to be scattered. The gulls wait on the chimney pots here

A periwinkle out already? Lucky you.

Spring is definitely coming. I saw the first daffodils in bloom yesterday (Clyro and Leominster) and crocuses! Yippee!!!

It's really started hasn't it? I saw banks of snowdrops today, and one daffodil on the way to Brighton. Won't be long before we can have after supper walks!

I've noticed one or two little blue stars peeping out in the front garden. I usually hack it back in autumn to keep it in bounds but wouldn't be without it altogether. It's lovely seeing all the new things appearing, more and more every day now.
